*Toby and his dad during the Allstate Hot Chocolate 15k/5k in San Francisco*

We caught up with Tobias Barton who participated in last year’s Hot Chocolate 15k/5k in San Francisco and finished the Allstate Hot Chocolate 15k/5k on January 7th. Toby’s inspirational story describes the resilience of a true athlete, even at 13 years-old. Two years ago, Toby suffered a head injury during a hiking trip that left him unable to enjoy physical activities. During his recovery, he heard about the Hot Chocolate race and wanted to make the 5k distance his goal. After successfully completing the race last year, he crossed the Finish line again this year, 13 minutes faster and setting a new PR.

January’s performance illustrates Toby’s continued enthusiasm for running, especially if there’s chocolate involved! The Allstate Hot Chocolate 15k/5k is Toby’s preferred race for a number of reasons. He enjoys the course that starts at Golden Gate Park, the chocolate fondue cup that’s filled will dippable delights, but most importantly, it’s a race that Toby enjoys doing with his dad. This is the second year where the duo has crossed the Finish line together and plan on maintaining this annual tradition.

Toby’s mother, Rebecca, considers herself fortunate to witness her son’s recovery and transformation. “It’s wonderful to watch Toby and his dad bond and share time together by running,” Rebecca says. “Running and training also gives Toby more opportunities to see his friends more frequently. He likes spending Saturday morning training with his friends, and it enables the dads to run together as well.”

When asked about possibly doing the 15k distance in the future, Toby replies, “I really like the 5k distance because I like training for it. I’d like to focus on shorter distances and improving my speed.”

Thanks to his coach Aaron at Gamespeed Sports Training, Toby is already seeing improvements in his running performance, strength, and self-confidence. The Allstate Hot Chocolate 15k/5k is an event that his entire family looks forward to each year and Toby is already looking forward to next year’s race!
